Though most of her clients belong to the 25-to-35-year-old downtown set, Dickson’s lengthy experience at the UES’s swanky Minardi Salon and Soho’s Dop Dop make her an expert at prescribing the right style for just about anybody. “It’s about the entire aesthetic,” she says. “If a woman on Wall Street wants an ‘edgy’ cut, it’s an entirely different kind of edgy from someone working as a bartender on the Lower East Side.” At her one-year-old Nolita shop, Dickson’s sweet and sassy sensibility is reflected in everything from the colorful vintage aprons she dons to the rolling cocktail carts serving up magazines and cookies (and yes, sometimes booze, too). She studied me for about thirty seconds and then said, "I think you should look like a folksinger who lives in the Village in the early '60s. Like someone who cut her hair herself." As it happened, that was exactly what I wanted, only I didn't know it. Later, when I went back for another cut, she amended the description to "A British schoolgirl who is having an affair with one of the Rolling Stones." Again: How did she know?

Granted, these are not the rarest of haircut ambitions (it's not like she somehow guessed my deep-seated desire to look like a Sun Belt mom who's having a midlife crisis, or a longshoreman after a long and difficult winter) but it's still impressive that she was able to size me up immediately. And her skills don't just apply to people who are obsessed with Mad Men; she keeps a preppy friend of mine looking like a natural redhead, and I have a curly-haired friend who loves her.

After earning her chops at a handful of well-regarded salons—Dop Dop, Minardi, Beauty Parlour, and Blackstones—hairstylist Julie Dickson took her accrued clientele and opened this pretty, personalized spot in April 2009 (the name references a game of pretend played by her young daughter and son).

The salon combines the cool factor of her former downtown posts with an air of uptown polish: The four stations face antique mirrors, and dated music cabinets bear styling tools and vases of fresh flowers. Globe pendant lights hang above ornate French parlor chairs in the small waiting area, and the two shampoo sinks are shielded from the rest of the space by an elaborately tiled, curved wall.

Dickson uses Davines, Redken, and L'Oréal products, combining wet and dry cutting methods to observe the natural tendencies of the hair. She tailors her technique according to her diverse clientele, which includes students, stylishly rumpled men, and various downtown creative types. Though Dickson is adept at both classic and sharp, angled cuts, her particular talent lies in fine tresses, which she coaxes into full-bodied, textured styles. — Lauren Murrow

Fox & Boy Salon Opens

Play cowboys and Indians as a kid? (Or adult. Whatever.)

Then you might be game for Fox and Boy, a new salon with an active imagination. Julie Dickson (Beauty Parlour at ABC, Blackstones Salon) is the brain behind the quaint Mulberry Street spot (named after a scheme her children invented).

The space has the homey Nolita feeling we have come to love: moss green walls, tons of fresh flowers, framed artwork by Dickson’s daughter. Antique sheet music cabinets serve as stations where Dickson focuses on bone structure, eye color, and complexion before offering up her legendary cuts and color.

I just walked out of this place with hair that i love. This is the first time it has happened in years.
Julie is gifted. Its just that.
I called after reading a review online. I got lucky and Julie had an appointment open the same day.
AND I AM SO HAPPY!
I had burnt up, crooked hair that every soho-shopper girl seemed to have. I am a californian who just could never change it. But alas, surfer hair is now suburban surfer hair and it was time for a change.
I guess it looks ok in certain lights and not being a big product junkie or daily styler- i grew to be comfortable with my thing.
I have longed for chic 80-'s helmut newton sleek hot hair with 60's bodaciousness for years. And I have a lot of straight thick hair.
Could never seem to find the right person to not aniston it. Instead she steadily fixed all the ills of 10 years of wrong. She did it subtly too. Nothing super major but her technique is impeccable. Its like hair out of a late 70's armani ad. Very sleek. Very hard to master. And she did.

This is the first time and I am shocked and happy.

She is thoughtful, fast, totally reassuring and super great. What a totally lucky nice surprise .

Was recommended to this place and when I called to make an appointment
I was helped out by (another) "Leslie from California" - what a pleasant surprise! Fox and Boy is a smaller salon, but it has a warm feeling and I enjoyed my haircut by Abbie, who did a great job. If
Anthropologie had a hair salon, it would be called Fox & Boy!

Another Kickass Haircut.

Today I had my second haircut with the adorable Julie Dickson of Fox & Boy salon in NoLIta.

I can't describe how awesome she is and how much I enjoy my haircuts with her! I absolutely need to schedule these more frequently just so we can hang out.

I showed up in a very typically CJM outfit: Black silk dress from Anthropologie, black herringbone patterned DKNY tights, shearling-lined leather Born boots, Lilly Pulitzer navy band jacket, Burberry scarf, London Fog black trench and a gold J.Crew birdcage necklace. Julie pronounced that I represent the perfect mix of uptown and downtown style (thanks, Julie!)
